Counselling Perspectives

Mind Avenues as a Psychological Health, Wellness and Growth initiative offers an individualised psychological well-being and self-growth services which follows a system and protocols.

In the universal field of mental health, it is observed that a client exists in a state of disequilibrium and unrest. A client approaches a psychologist/counsellor only in order to stabilise or to regain control and maintain equilibrium. A psychologist is generally equipped with professional qualifications and training and has a ready reckoner technique of approach a case along with a platter of psychometric assessment tools to understand behavioural dynamics and probe into the subconscious mind linked to problems. They are trained to explore the depth of the client’s challenges and plan a path ahead for them. In this process a mix and match of tools and techniques are available with the psychologist. The clients are asked to reflect, and deliberate on various issues that are discussed and which culminate into the challenge exhibited. After using a combination of tools and techniques the psychologist gives the client tasks and assignments and fixes intervention sessions.

Clients approach counselling because of their requirement for behavioural, psychological, mental health issues and any other deficits in their life. Clients are in distress, need and they are unable to discriminate between what they want, what they need and what they don’t want. Hence existing in a state of disequilibrium the client approaches the psychologist

The psychologists at Mind Avenues are known as catalysts and work on a concept of establishing a deeper connect with the client. The counselling process has to be a journey of intense personal experience for both client and professional and yet times crosses the boundaries of professionalism and goes a step further or beyond. The qualities of the catalyst have to thus be in a manner that deeper connect as well as think out of the box. The catalyst has to visualise the client’s world from an empathetic perspective. Furthermore, have to go beyond theories for a while and study the platter of challenges that a client is burdened with. The catalyst should also be equipped with effective solutions too. An in-depth psychological and behavioural assessment needs to be undertaken so as to examine the challenges of the client. Solutions also need to be given based on the analysis of the assessment. The client should be approached with a systematic technique which works and result in positive psychological and behviaoural changes.

The client is examined based on what is wanted, not wanted and what is needed. Clients are taught to work on the following criteria.

1.     The client is faced with challenges because they possess fixed perspectives. It is advised to look at other perspectives from a 360-degree perspective.

2.    The client experiences symptoms of a disorder but instead of looking at branding or categorising the client a more positive approach to scrutinising the problem is needed.

3.    People face challenges only because of expectations they have of others. Self-control and independence is the only way a person can overcome those challenges.

4.    Clients learn to be dependent on others and hence become helpless. It is needed for them to become independent and develop an internal locus of control.

5.    Clients’ needs to understand that requirements and wants are blocks and is based on expectation. Acceptance of people and of situations is the only way mental health can be maintained.

6.    Clients often experience a feeling of being trapped in situations. It is very crucial to develop insights and find alternatives.

7.    Clients frequently experience a feeling of being stuck with useless thought.  It is a choice to create useful positive thoughts, rather than harp on past and useless thoughts which will get us nowhere.

8.    Clients approach the counsellor with the intention to change. The client wants to change but it is even more important to focus on need-assessment that want-satisfaction.
